This tour is about Slovenia and its wine culture, which dates back to 1200 years ago. Slovenia is also a country where the national anthem »A toast«, among others, speaks about wine and a good vintage. The tour will take you to all three wine regions of Slovenia where you will learn how such a small place as Slovenia offers such a great variety of climate, soil, winds, sun, and people. Starting from Goriška Brda region, which has been influenced by the Adriatic Sea from one and the Alps from the other side, through windy but still Meditteranean Vipava Valley where nature on occasions shows no mercy, touching the capital and its upraising focus on representing Slovenian wines on wine tours, continuing down south to Bizeljsko with its exceptional sparkling wines and wineries deep down the prehistoric sea sediments to Štajerska region known for its white wines, which are ranked as one of the best in Europe. Oh, and of course, all the local food that comes with the wine! Have you already booked your Grand Wine Tour of Slovenia?

DAY 1: Goriška region is known among Slovenians as their version of Tuscany. Its endless hills with medieval fortified settlements on hilltops and nearby Italian border prove they might be right. However, this region deserves not to be compared to any other place because of its unique character. Our first stop will be the most well-known brand of Slovenian wines, a proof that if you know how to do it, your wines will become famous even among celebrities all around the world. After the tour of the winery and tasting of the finest local wines, it will be time for lunch. After we will visit Šmartno fortified medieval settlement, and learn about the history of the area. Our next stop will be Bjana house of sparkling wines. Their top quality sparkling wines are highly ranked at international competitions and their estate – mansion from the 13th century – was proclaimed as an Italian UNESCO site.

DAY 2: After breakfast there, we will stop at Gonjače view tower from where one can see the Alps transforming into the Dolomites on one side and all the way to the Adriatic Sea with Po plain on the other, if we are lucky we will even be able to see Venice. On the way to Vipava valley, we will stop in Vipavski križ and have lunch in the local restaurant. The winery of the day will be the house of pinot. Our second day will finish with a glass of wine and a slice of delicious Karst prosciutto at a local farm.

DAY 3: After breakfast, we will visit the Slovenian capital Ljubljana and learn about their growing wine culture. Ljubljana’s castle hill was recently planted with local vines, and we will also be able to see the cousin of the oldest vine in the world, which is located in the courtyard of Ljubljana castle. After sightseeing, we will have lunch at the local restaurant, which is famous for being partly owned by the top female chef of 2017 Ana Roš. After lunch, we will be heading towards South-Eastern Slovenia, Bizeljsko region. Our host will be a sparkling wine expert.

DAY 4: Štajerska region is well known for its white wines: riesling, chardonnay, šipon, traminec, etc. Our wine cellar of the day will be Steyer. Before we will arrive there, we will stop in Jerusalem region. Did you know we have one in Slovenia as well? The Jerusalem region is an extremely picturesque piece of land, having endless hills transforming one to another and all vines making stripes throughout the land. After tasting, we will finish our day on top of the wine tower in Lendava – Vinarium.

DAY 5: After breakfast, it will be time to return back to Ljubljana region. On the way, we will stop in Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian town. After sightseeing, we will be heading towards Zlati grič, another great example of how wine producers who know their goals, can succeed. We will first have lunch at their restaurant, which is famous for its great cuisine. After, there will be wine tasting with a wine tour around their modern cellar. Afterward, we will visit world-famous Charterhouse Žiče. When we finish with our visit, we will head back to Ljubljana.
